I thoroughly enjoyed the show when I saw it years ago and think that the score is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. I just mean that for a show to last that long is not only amazing but unheard of in this day and age. Most shows are lucky to run a year a two but twenty-one is one that will probably stand the test of time. To this day Phantom is still one of our most requested shows and probably will be for years to come. I've been selling theater tickets for 31 years now and cannot believe how many times my customers go to see this show over and over again.

The Phantom of the Opera won 7 Tony Awards in 1988, which was the year my partner and friend Bill Stolting and I opened are little ticket agency in The Big Apple. The Phantom of the Opera won the much coveted Best Musical Tony Award that year as well thanks to the brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's gorgeous music with lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart.

Still selling thousands of tickets every week, The Phantom of the Opera tells the mysterious story of Christine Daae, a beautiful young opera soprano and the disfigured musical genius that falls in love with her. His goal is to make Christine the new star of the Paris Opera as he exercises a reign of terror over everyone in his path. The setting is the Paris Opera House in the early 1900's. Originally not a very strong selling novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera was made into a movie in 1925 and then a musical in 1986 appearing in London prior to its Broadway run.

The Phantom of the Opera is still "fresh" when you consider it has been playing on Broadway for over 20 years now. Howard McGillin stars as the current Phantom having played the role for more than 2000 performances and Jennifer Hope Wills plays the role of Christine. Ms. Wills is best known for co-starring with Brooke Shields in the most recent revival of A Wonderful Town a few years back on Broadway.

I have seen The Phantom of the Opera several times in New York and it is one of the better Broadway shows, particularly if you don't get the opportunity to see much theater. Right now our company has special access to amazing orchestra and front mezzanine seats at prices that are Below Face Value. BFV is simply a way our customers can gain access to The Phantom of the Opera and several other popular Broadway Shows at prices that are less than the regular printed price on the tickets.

So if you think you might want to buy yourself some tickets to The Phantom of the Opera at prices, consider calling Applause Theater Service in New York City a call. Remember to ask for the BFV ticket deal and tell them The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. You'll be so glad you did.

John Cudia Will Succeed Howard Mc Gillin, World's Longest-Running Phantom, on Broadway

What a run! He leaves the Majestic Theatre after ten years — with some breaks in between — and takes with him a new record: world's longest-running Phantom! I saw him twice and he was quite good. But I'd have to say that it's about time that this show gets a fresh Phantom!

At a record-breaking 2,450 performances and counting, McGillin has already played the title role more than any other performer on Broadway. His closest competition, as far as performance count, at just under 2,400 performances, is the late Rob Guest, who played the title role in Australia and New Zealand. Americans Franc D'Ambrosio — the longtime record-holder before Guest — and Brad Little follow with over 2,100 performances each.
John Cudia, the current star of the national tour, will take over the role on Broadway after a nearly decade-long association with the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, directed by Harold Prince, on July 27.

After ten years since his first of many engagements with the production, McGillin has decided to pursue other theatrical ventures, according to a statement released May 7.

McGillin is a two-time Tony Award nominee as Best Actor in a Musical (Anything Goes) and Best Featured Actor in a Musical (The Mystery of Edwin Drood).

Cudia will return to the Broadway production, where last summer he stepped in to play the title role for a limited engagement of ten weeks. This time, he'll be taking over the role officially.
Continuing in their roles in the Broadway cast are Marni Raab (Christine, Jennifer Hope Wills returns June 1), Ryan Silverman (Raoul), George Lee Andrews (Monsieur André), David Cryer (Monsieur Firmin), Patricia Phillips (Carlotta), Rebecca Judd (Madame Giry), Evan Harrington (Piangi), Heather McFadden (Meg Giry) and Elizabeth Loyacano (Christine at certain performances).

Cudia has had a long association with the show. He first joined the national tour in November 1999 as a Swing and cover for the leading role of Raoul. After eight months he took over as Raoul, which he played from July 2000 through March 2002, earning a National Broadway Touring Award nomination. He also covered the title role. On that tour, he met his future wife, Broadway actress Kathy Voytko. In October 2002 he joined the Broadway company as Raoul, a role that he would play in New York for over two-and-a-half years and 750 performances, through May 2005.
During this time, he also continued to cover the title role. He next took over as The Phantom on the national tour in April 2006, playing it for nearly 700 performances through November 2007. He will continue to perform with the tour until his final performance in Minneapolis on May 24.

Cudia also played Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway.

The longest-running show in Broadway history (achieved in 2006 when it surpassed the then-record run of Cats), The Phantom of the Opera is the winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is currently working on a sequel to the show, Phantom: Love Never Dies, to bow in 2009-10.

The Phantom of the Opera has discounts available with Applause at below the normal face value of the ticket. It is the longest running show in the history of Broadway. The show plays all over the world and has grossed over $5 billion dollars in ticket sales. I believe it is the largest single entertainment attraction in the world.

The Phantom of the Opera is based on the famous Gaston Leroux novel that tells the story of a mysterious masked man that lurks in the basement and haunts the players at The Paris Opera House. The phantom falls madly in love with Christine, the new young opera soprano wanting her to flee with him while he terrorizes everyone else in the opera house. The Phantom of the Opera has beautiful classical music written by the great Andrew Lloyd Webber, with direction by the legendary Harold Prince.

The Phantom of the Opera won seven 1988 Tony Awards including Best Musical. For over 2300 performances now, Howard McGillin has played the leading role of the phantom, more than any other actor around the world. Marni Raab plays the role of Christine and Tim Martin Gleason plays Raoul (Christine's love interest).

I just found out that on April 24, 2009, Ryan Silverman will take over the role of Raoul in the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera. Mr. Silverman has played the role of Raoul in Las Vegas for some time now. He will become the 3rd Las Vegas player to participate in the Broadway version in the last year or so. He will become the 13th person to play Raoul on Broadway. Mr. Silverman recently returned from London after playing the role of "Tony" in West Side Story. He made his Broadway debut in Cry-Baby last year as well.

I have seen The Phantom of the Opera several times in the last 21 years. As I recall, I first started my own Broadway theater ticket service with my friend and partner Bill just before The Phantom of the Opera first began playing on Broadway in New York City. It was the hottest show we ever sold tickets for when the business started and for many years that followed. There have been and will be many other hit shows that play on Broadway, yet I'm not sure we will ever again see a "long term" live theater event like this show ever again friends.

Right now, my company Applause Theater Service,an officially New York State licensed ticket agency operating in the theater district on New York, has access to discount tickets for The Phantom of the Opera for most performances (except Saturday evenings).
